I have seen 3 phase fan motors running on large transformers using single phase power how be it it was running backwards ! the wind had spun it backwards in the wrong direction than the fan tried to start blowing one of the fuses in the 3 phase disconnect. Not to mention the resort itself must have some power available somewhow? After all the closest town is less than 60km away. It is unfortunate, but I would say the generator is the best option. Any conversion back and/or forth will cost energy and will have a certain loss of energy (but you knew that). It would be interesting if the friend in question will go with some sort of inverter to three phase to see the friend's electricity bill (or compare it to his current bill).
