I have seen 3 phase fan motors running on large transformers using single phase power how be it it was running backwards ! the wind had spun it backwards in the wrong direction than the fan tried to start blowing one of the fuses in the 3 phase disconnect. Not to mention the resort itself must have some power available somewhow? After all the closest town is less than 60km away. I remember the cables at the snow fields in Victoria are powered by massive generators and wonder if power supply wouldn't have been cheaper in the long run. Guess why Australia is not competitive in manufacturing. The problem itself shows a poorly designed infrastructure with the associated consequences for business and the end result of high prices for manufactured goods. Not because it has a better efficiency in converting diesel power to electricity but because of the relative difference between fuel price and costs associated with having a three phase power supply installed.
2 phase to 3 phase converter generator#
It is unfortunate, but I would say the generator is the best option. Any conversion back and/or forth will cost energy and will have a certain loss of energy (but you knew that). It would be interesting if the friend in question will go with some sort of inverter to three phase to see the friend's electricity bill (or compare it to his current bill). And I will be able to use the inverter to supply other three phase gear. I haven't installed it yet (still need to clean out the workshop enough to be able to fit the hoist) so I can't confirm that it works. He threw two extra things into the box when he sent it to me: some shielded cable (it's an inverter so you are supposed to use shielded cable on the load side) and a 20 amp C-curve circuit breaker (which has a better load response curve that the breakers normally used).
The Molnar hoist people told me I needed to spend $1000 on their specially wound electric motor, but my sparky mate assured me that his under-$500 (and he hasn't sent me the bill yet!) box could handle the high startup load because of recent design improvements and he chose a type that could. Mine was chosen and purchased for me by a friend who owns an industrial electrical installation business in Qld. There are different types so your friend might need help to specify the right one. They have been around a long time, are proven, and they are getting better all the time. It is a Schneider Altivar 312, rated at 2.2kW or 3 hp. I have recently purchased one to use with a three phase hoist. The other otpion is an electronic phase converter. I know people who use it and it works fine, though they are only occasional users where your friend will likely have his generator running all day with all that cost and noise.

I know it is 480 volts because I have that supply myself and I have measured it. So you can get two separate circuits of 240 volts for twice the current, or a single circuit of 480 volts between the two actives for twice the voltage, or a mix of both. So-called "two phase" is actually 480 volt single phase with a centre tap for the neutral. I'm an agricultural engineer, so the electrical engineers and electricians among us might find fault with my analysis, but I have been thinking and talking to electrical engineers about this issue for 30 years.
